Someone just recommended you. Will they call?

What your customers see after a referral, and the 7 things that decide whether your phone rings.

A tale of two businesses

Two electricians in the same town. Same skill. Same honest prices. A neighbor recommends each of them on the same rainy Tuesday.

Both homeowners sit in the driveway and look the name up on their phone.

The first site opens fast. It says what he does and which towns he serves. There are real photos of his truck, fresh reviews, and a call button right at the top. He's booked in 40 seconds.

The second does work just as good. But his page crawls, his last review is two years old, and the phone number is buried. The homeowner goes back to Google and calls someone else.

Word of mouth didn't fail him. What people saw next did.

The test

Grab your phone. Search your business name the way a customer would: on Google, on Google Maps, and in ChatGPT. Then answer these 7 questions honestly about what you see.

  1. 1. Mobile speed

Does your website open in about 2 seconds on a phone, on cell data (not Wi-Fi)?

  2. 2. Clear "what and where"

Can someone tell what you do and what town you're in within 5 seconds of opening your homepage?

  3. 3. Google profile

Is your Google Business Profile claimed, with correct hours, phone and the right category?

  4. 4. Reviews: count and recency

Do you have 15+ Google reviews, with at least one from the last 60 days?

  5. 5. Real photos

Do people see real photos of you, your crew, your trucks or your work — not stock photos?

  6. 6. Town coverage

Does your website name the towns you work in?

  7. 7. One-tap calling

On a phone, is there a tap-to-call button at the top of your site and your Google profile?
